Excavation Insurance

“Excavation” is defined as any earthwork, trench, and well, shaft, tunnel or underground working, or more commonly known/associated with work on property foundations.

It was recorded that between 1997 and 2002 there were 37 fatalities directly caused by the ground collapsing during excavation works. This was due to either the lack of support of the sides of excavations or an unsafe system of work. In almost all the fatal accidents, death was caused by suffocation due to the weight of the soil collapse: one cubic metre of soil weighs approximately one tonne. It is therefore essential that the hazards and risks of groundwork’s and excavations are recognised, and that safe systems of work are in place to eliminate and reduce accidents.

It is therefore vital, as well as a legal requirement to ensure that not only do you have the correct risk assessments in place, but also an insurance policy to cover you in the event of fatality or property damage.
